That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. Psalm 26:7 [NKJV]
Today in thinking about God’s wondrous works I am focused on “extraordinary”, which means beyond what is usual or exceptional in character. I would venture to say, that definition, would describe Bethany Hamilton as being one of God’s extraordinary works !
Faith, courage, and determination are some other adjectives that I would use to describe Bethany Hamilton, for after a shark attack, Bethany, an avid surfer, was left to face life with one arm and the possibility that she would never again be able to do the things she had once done.
However, Bethany knew that God had a plan for her life that was bigger then she could see, a plan that was for good, to give her a future and a hope according to Jeremiah 29:11 in the Bible. Bethany also believed the scripture Philippians 4:13 that says she could do all things through Him who gives her strength. Therefore, Bethany, with the help of God and her incredibly supportive family and friends, overcame the odds and succeeded in becoming a professional surfer, even though she only had one arm.
Bethany said her experience of having only one arm has allowed her to touch more people than if she still had two arms, because her faith and courage has inspired many others to not give up no matter what odds they might be facing.
Bethany’s story is told in the movie “Soul Surfer” which just came out in the local theaters on Friday, April 8, 2011. “Soul Surfer”is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton’s life before and after the shark attack.
I recommend that everyone should go to see this movie. You will cry and feel the hurt as she, her family, and friends go through the life changes that the shark attack brought about, but you will also laugh and rejoice with them as Bethany’s faith, courage and determination cause her to overcome and be victorious !
Her story will inspire you to never give up when things don’t go according to your plans and it will encourage you to know “that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” [Romans 8:28}
